Late Application Fees (Less than 6 months before arrival):
- €900 for a full school year
- €500 for a semester
Payment Schedule:
- 20% due within 10 days after receiving the invoice
- 50% due 4 months before arrival
- 30% due 2 months before arrival

À propos des écoles: “Gymnasium”
Gymnasium: une école secondaire
Nous plaçons les étudiants internationaux dans des „Gymnasien“. Le Gymnasium est une école secondaire qui conduit à l´Université. Le cursus est plutôt académique, comportant deux langues étrangères ainsi que les maths et des cours scientifiques. Environ 30% des étudiants allemands suivent ce genre d´école secondaire (plus sur les gymnasien sur système d´école en Allemagne).
Abitur
L´examen de fin d'études (baccaluréat) s´appelle “Abitur” et les boursiers ont accès aux études universitaires en Allemagne. Le choix des Universités et du genre d´études est toutefois limité. Quoiqu´il en soit seuls les étudiants avec un très bon bac peuvent étudier où ils veulent et ce qu´ils veulent. Veuillez noter: les étudiants étrangers désirant passer le bac doivent aller dans une école privée. La préparation au bac n´est pas possible pour eux dans les écoles publiques.

L´année scolaire
L´année scolaire en Allemagne commence en AOÛT/SEPT, les vacances variant de région en région (normalement 2 semaines en automne, pendant Noêl et aux environs de Pâques et 6 semaines de vacances en été ). Les cours sont du LUNDI au VEND, normalement de 8h à 13h ou 14h, ce qui laisse assez de temps libre pour se joindre à des groupes et clubs principalement de sport ou d´art l´après-midi ou pendant les weekends.

At GLS Berlin, we carefully select and screen every host family to make sure students feel safe, welcome, and at home in Germany. Our process includes:
- Personal interviews: Families are personally interviewed by GLS staff to learn about their lifestyle, values, and motivation to host.
- Home visits: We inspect the house or apartment to ensure it meets our standards for comfort and safety.
- Ongoing support: Host families receive guidance from GLS and can reach out at any time. Students also have a GLS contact person throughout their stay.
- Cultural exchange focus: Many host families have children who join exchange programs themselves, so they understand the importance of intercultural learning.
This way, you can be sure that your host family in Germany will not only provide room and board but also give you an authentic cultural experience and a warm welcome into everyday German life.

How You Live with a Host Family
Most students will have their own private room. In rare cases, and only after consultation, you may share a room with a host sibling or another exchange student. Common areas such as the living room, kitchen, and bathroom are shared with the family.
Your host family in provides full board:
- Monday to Friday: breakfast, packed lunch, and evening meal
- Saturday and Sunday: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Meals are prepared by the host family just as they would cook for themselves, giving you an authentic taste of daily German life.

The GLS High School team in Berlin
The GLS high school team in Berlin is your first point of contact in Germany. You’ll meet them during the Berlin weekends, and if you attend high school in Berlin, you can reach out anytime for guidance or support.
The team also organizes regular activities for exchange students, such as weekend trips to Prague or Hamburg—a fun way to meet other international students and explore new cities in Germany.

Local coordinators in other cities
If you study outside Berlin - say in Hamburg or Nürnberg - a local coordinator will support you throughout your stay. Living in the same city, they stay in touch via email, phone, and personal meetings to help with any questions or problems.
Local coordinators also organize fun activities for exchange students, such as bowling, Christmas market meetups, or day trips to nearby cities. They can also assist if you want to join a sports club, take music lessons, or try new hobbies like horseback riding.
